Website Redesign SEO Checklist Before You Rebuild

Use this website redesign SEO checklist to protect rankings, improve structure, update metadata, preserve URLs, add redirects, and improve enquiry flow.

Audit the current website first

Before redesigning, check which pages exist, which pages get traffic, what keywords show impressions, and which URLs are already indexed. This helps avoid losing useful search signals during the rebuild.

Preserve or redirect important URLs

If an old page has traffic or backlinks, keep the same URL when possible. If the URL changes, add a proper redirect so visitors and search engines reach the new page instead of a 404.

Improve metadata and content

A redesign is a good time to rewrite page titles, descriptions, headings, service sections, proof blocks, FAQs, and calls to action. Better structure helps both search engines and visitors.

Submit and monitor after launch

After launch, submit the sitemap in Search Console, request indexing for important pages, and monitor coverage, clicks, impressions, and contact events in analytics.
